AFT-NH Legislative Alert: Stop State Mandated School Budget Caps - Protect Local Control!

URGENT ACTION NEEDED

Stop State Mandated School Budget Caps - Protect Local Control - Defeat HB 675

On January 7th, the NH House will vote on HB 675 which would establish state-mandated budget caps for local school districts despite the will of the voters. This bill would strip away local control from voters and limit school district budgets to an unreasonable state formula that does not reflect what NH students really need. We need to preserve local control and protect public schools.

In 2025, voters across the state overwhelmingly rejected local school budget caps. Now the NH Legislature wants to override the will of voters and impose an arbitrary cap in all communities which will force cuts in school budgets despite what is needed for students. At the same time the legislature has failed to adequately fund public schools, this move would put essential programs and opportunities for students at risk.

Please contact your state representative now and tell them to VOTE NO to an attack on local control.

How will students be impacted? The first things to be cut will be art, music, electives, foreign language, advanced placement courses, CTE opportunities, sports, clubs, field trips, technology, teachers, paraeducators and other essential staff.

Action Requested:

Tell your state representative to trust voters to make these decisions in their own communities.

Once you have taken this action, please share with others so we can send a strong message to legislators that this action is a step too far and a slap in the face of every voter.

Thank you.
