AFT-NH President Deb Howes released the following statement on Governor Ayotte's Veto of SB 434:
AFT-New Hampshire applauds Governor Kelly Ayotte for vetoing SB 434 and protecting Granite State students' freedom to learn in their public schools. The bill would have made it easier for a single individual to challenge books, films, lessons, and other instructional materials, increasing the risk that valuable educational resources could be removed for all students. By rejecting SB 434, Governor Ayotte recognized that decisions about curriculum and instructional materials should reflect the needs of entire school communities, not the objections of one person. Her veto protects students' access to a broad range of ideas, respects local decision-making, and preserves educators' ability to provide honest, high-quality instruction.
"Governor Ayotte's veto is a victory for Granite State students," said Deb Howes, President of AFT-New Hampshire. "Public schools should open doors to learning, not close them. Students deserve access to a broad range of ideas, and educators should be trusted to use their professional judgment to choose materials, and to help students think critically and learn about the world around them. We commend the Governor for standing with students, educators, parents and local communities by rejecting legislation that could have limited learning opportunities for all."
