State's Effort to Overturn Claremont Will Harm Students, Communities, and Taxpayers
AFT-NH President Deb Howes released the following statement:
At stake in the State's appeal of Rand school funding case is every New Hampshire student's constitutional right to a robust public education in their school districts. If the State succeeds, students will lose educational opportunities, the divide between wealthy and struggling communities will grow, and local property taxpayers will be left paying more for a responsibility that belongs much more to the State.
Deb Howes, President of AFT-New Hampshire, said, "Claremont affirmed a simple promise: every child in New Hampshire deserves access to a quality public education. The State cannot set educational standards and then walk away from the responsibility to fund them. For the sake of our students and the future of our communities, New Hampshire should be strengthening public schools and easing the property tax burden, not abandoning its constitutional obligation to our students."
